The Corporation
The same evening I met the Yes Men, I watched an excellent documentary : The Corporation.
The subject is extremely serious but you might laugh (laugh yellow, in French) at some points. Of course, it is oriented and those who work with their heart and soul for a WC (= world company, whose main -if not unique- purpose is to maintain a hyper high level of income to a handful of shareholders and pay for the famous golden parachutes of fired CEOs) will certainly not see it the same way and call it rubbish. C'est la vie !
Beside the fact that Noam Chomsky and Michael Moore are part of the casting and that it should be shown in all schools and universities, I would like to just mention 2 things about the film :
- the first part compares the company (= a moral person) to an individual (= a physical person). From a psychatric standpoint, the company is a seriously, VERY seriously ill person. If it were a human being, it would require heavy medication and confinement.
- the documentary also outlines that both those persons nowadays have the same rights, in a court for instance. No need to say that in cases such as the Bhopal disaster by Union Carbide (now Dow's Chemicals) or the milk with growth hormone (rBGH) by Monsanto, the company's rights are not equal, but superior to the human rights. Dow and Monsanto never EVER admitted their responsibility in those 2 cases. Consequently no compensation was ever given to the victims. Unbelievable, isn't it ?
Needless to mention that distributing the film was pretty tough and the director decided to make it available on BitTorrent.
Anyway... I am well aware that WCs do not generate only disasters. But what the film shows is FACTS, and this is chilling. I know I am just spitting in the soup (!), all the more than I've worked for a WC. But I think I'll carry on spitting in the soup.
